Monica is a Diné (Navajo) writer and photographer based in the desert Southwest. She studied English Literature at Arizona State University and has a professional background in education, marketing, and nonprofit organizations. In 2014, she returned to school at Phoenix College to begin building career options in photography and creative writing.
Monica currently writes for Only In Your State‘s Arizona section and previously covered the Phoenix area for The Navajo Post. In 2015, she won first place in the poetry category for the annual Maricopa Community Colleges Creative Writing Competition. As a writer, Monica specializes in topics about gender, Indigenous peoples, and travel. You can read some of her musings on her blog, Beyond These Sacred Mountains.
In addition to writing and photography, Monica also enjoys running, weaving, and playing the violin. She currently lives in Phoenix with her partner and their herd of cats and dogs.
